Anya Taylor-Joy has described her marriage to musician Malcolm McRae as a source of newfound fearlessness and security.
In a recent interview with Elle UK, the actress, who married McRae in April 2022, shared that having him as a partner has provided a sense of security she had not previously experienced. "To have a best friend who goes through life with you — it has given me a sense of security that I didn’t really ever dream about," she stated.
Taylor-Joy, 30, added that this security has emboldened her to take more risks. "Now that I have it, I just feel emboldened to take more risks because I know I’ve got something really nutritive and solid and healthy and so f–king fun," she told the publication.
She also noted that she laughs approximately 90% of the time with her husband, whom she affectionately called her "best friend."
To maintain their connection amidst busy schedules, Taylor-Joy and McRae, 32, make an effort to check in with each other each morning. Taylor-Joy mentioned that McRae uses a "dumb phone" and that she has been largely offline, finding that stepping back from social media has been beneficial for her mental health and allows her to be more present.
The couple began dating in 2021 after meeting at a music studio. They eloped on April Fools' Day in 2022 in New Orleans before celebrating with a larger, star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, in October 2023 at the historic Palazzo Pisani Moretta. Guests at the Venice wedding included Cara Delevingne, Julia Garner, Nicolas Hoult, and Miles Teller with his wife, Keleigh.
Taylor-Joy explained their decision to elope first, stating they are "real romantics" and wanted their initial union to be a private experience. "We were born on the same day. And we wanted to make sure that our first experience was something that was completely for us. So we eloped in New Orleans with our two best friends and had the time of our lives," she recalled.
She also expressed gratitude for their second ceremony with family and friends, describing it as "so beyond beautiful."
