German artist Anne Imhof has ushered in a new era of performance art with her distinct style of slow-moving, bass-heavy installations that command attention. Her 2025 production, Doom: House of Hope, a three-hour piece loosely inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, garnered significant acclaim and drew 9,000 attendees over its 10-day run at New York City's Park Avenue Armory. The performance featured a cast combining Balenciaga models with professional ballet dancers.
Imhof's characteristic angsty-cool aesthetic has made her a sought-after figure among fashion brands and European museum curators. In the past year, she was featured in Valentino's Cruise 2026 fashion campaign and unveiled a permanent public sculpture, a swimming pool installation, outside the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal.
Further expanding her international presence, Imhof is set to open her first solo exhibition in Asia in September. The survey exhibition, hosted at Hong Kong's Tai Kwun center, will showcase her signature works alongside a new performance developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Ballet. This recognition solidifies her position as one of 2026's most influential figures in art.
