Alan Titchmarsh has put his Hampshire farmhouse and its four‑acre landscaped garden on the market with a guide price of £3.95 million, saying he and his wife, Alison, plan to downsize after more than 20 years at the property.
Manor Farm House, described in the estate agent listing as a late 17th‑century five‑bedroom farmhouse in the village of Holybourne near Alton, is offered through Savills. The listing highlights formal gardens, approximately two acres of wildflower meadow, a kitchen garden with greenhouses and vegetable plots, a fenced pond with a small jetty and an additional field providing views across the Hampshire countryside.
Titchmarsh, 76, who rose to prominence as a television gardener and remains a prolific horticultural journalist and broadcaster, told Country Life that the couple bought the property in 2002 “not only because we wanted a Georgian house, but also because I felt that I had one more garden in me.” He said the decision to sell is driven by a desire to be nearer their daughters, Polly and Camilla, and their grandchildren, and by a wish to undertake a new gardening project elsewhere.
The couple undertook extensive renovation work after purchasing the house. Titchmarsh said they discovered woodworm and death‑watch beetle and removed substantial amounts of debris, but otherwise respected the building’s fabric and made no structural changes. The ground floor and bathrooms were fitted with underfloor heating, floorboards replaced chipboard, and interiors were redecorated. Savills notes original features remain, including oak beams and sash windows, and the kitchen includes bespoke painted units, an Aga, a butler’s sink, a larder and a utility cupboard.
Outbuildings are highlighted in the sales particulars, which describe an “excellent range of outbuildings” including a 42‑foot party barn that has been used as theatre space. The formal gardens are complemented by the wildflower meadow, created by the owner to provide a seasonal display from late spring to early autumn, according to the listing.
Titchmarsh and his wife have lived at Manor Farm House for more than two decades, during which time the garden and house were developed with an emphasis on combining period features with practical horticultural spaces. The property’s combination of formal planting, productive kitchen gardens and meadowland reflects Titchmarsh’s long public profile as a gardener, broadcaster and author.
The sale follows a pattern of high‑profile gardeners and broadcasters who have placed notable properties on the market in recent years, drawing interest from buyers seeking houses with established gardens and usable outbuildings. Savills is handling viewings and further enquiries as the property is marketed at the stated guide price.
