State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing a $5 billion one-time dividend to more than 49 million auto policyholders. This payout is a return of capital to policyholders, driven by the company's strong financial performance in 2025, including favorable underwriting results and a decrease in auto repair costs and collision frequency.

As a mutual insurance company, State Farm considers its policyholders as members. When financial conditions are favorable, the company may return a portion of its earnings directly to eligible policyholders through dividends. This initiative is a result of State Farm's 2025 financial standing, which also allowed the company to reduce auto insurance rates by an average of 10 percent in 40 states.

"As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future," Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual President and CEO, said in a statement. "That translated this year to lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend."

To qualify for the dividend, customers must have held a State Farm Mutual private passenger auto policy at any point between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025. The policy must not have been part of a state-assigned risk program, and the dividend payment must be at least $10. Customers who had a qualifying policy in 2025 but have since switched insurance providers are still eligible to receive the dividend.

The dividend is exclusive to auto insurance policyholders; dividends for homeowners, renters, and life insurance policies are evaluated separately. The amount each policyholder receives is calculated as 4% to 10% of the premium paid on their qualifying 2025 policy. Payment amounts will vary by state, influenced by each state's underwriting contribution, and by the number of policies held by an individual. The average payment is approximately $100 per vehicle, with policyholders receiving separate payments for each qualifying policy.

Payments began being issued as of July 31, 2026. While many customers have already received their dividends, the distribution process is occurring in waves and is expected to take several months to complete nationwide due to the large number of eligible vehicles. Customers with an email address on file will receive an email with instructions for accessing a payment portal, where they can opt for digital payment or a mailed check. Those without an email address on file will automatically receive a check by mail.

State Farm advises both current and former eligible customers to watch for official notification letters or emails and to be cautious of communications that seem suspicious. The company recommends using State Farm's official dividend resources for verification if any communication raises doubts or prompts suspicion about clicking unfamiliar links.
