The National Children's Hospital faces potential further delays as its construction has been plagued by ongoing defects, including issues with water, air, and fire safety systems. Builders BAM has not confirmed an opening date for the facility, leading to uncertainty about when it will be operational.

The board in charge of the National Children's Hospital stated they have not been given a 2028 opening date by BAM, contradicting information previously provided by the construction company. This lack of clarity follows the discovery of additional faults in the building work, which could push back the hospital's opening. The project's costs have reportedly reached €2.2 billion and continue to rise.

A spokesperson for BAM stated that the focus for all stakeholders remains on completing the hospital to the highest standards as soon as possible for the children and young people it will serve. Despite this commitment, the company has declined to comment on the specific reasons for the ongoing defects and the resulting delays. The construction company also declined to comment on why more and more defects continue to be uncovered at what has become one of the world’s most expensive children’s hospitals.
