Carnival Cruise Line is facing a mixed reaction to a new pilot program that identifies passengers who have prepaid their gratuities by placing special stickers on their cruise cards. The initiative, which also includes thank-you notes in staterooms, aims to recognize guests for their generosity toward the crew.
A TikTok video shared on October 28 showcased a sticker reading "Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities," sparking a lively discussion online. Carnival stated that the program is an "important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible."
The company added that the stickers and notes are a way to acknowledge guests who have prepaid and to show appreciation for their generosity, noting that the program is part of a pilot and feedback is being considered.
However, the program has drawn criticism from some passengers who feel it is inappropriate to publicly identify tippers. Concerns were raised about potential social pressure on those who may not be able to prepay and whether tipping practices should be a private matter. Some commenters expressed a preference for tipping in cash directly to staff.
Conversely, other passengers have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a positive recognition of their efforts to support the crew. Some believe that upfront tipping can lead to better service.
The gratuity stickers are not the only recent policy change at Carnival Cruise Line to generate passenger discussion. Earlier this year, the cruise line faced pushback over dynamic pricing for drink and Wi-Fi packages, and previous reports indicated passenger frustration with rising daily gratuities and added service charges across several major cruise lines.
