McDonald's Australia is introducing a novel breakfast menu, marking the first time the fast-food chain has launched a breakfast range inspired by one of its original McDonaldland characters, Birdie the Early Bird. The new "Birdie's Brekkie" menu, which became available nationwide on Wednesday, August 26, includes a signature pink breakfast sauce, a Strawberry Shortcake Frappe, and four variations of classic McDonald's breakfast items.
Central to the new offering is Birdie's Brekkie Signature Sauce, a creamy pink sauce designed to complement several existing breakfast items. The menu features a Birdie Sausage and Egg McMuffin, a Birdie Bacon and Egg McMuffin, and a Birdie Chicken and Bacon McMuffin, all incorporating the new sauce. A Birdie Brekkie McWrap, combining bacon, a hash brown, egg, and cheese with the sauce, rounds out the savory options. Customers who purchase the complete Birdie's Brekkie Meal receive a choice of a McMuffin or Brekkie McWrap, a hash brown, and the new Strawberry Shortcake Frappe. The frappe itself is a bright pink drink with biscuit crumb elements, inspired by strawberry shortcake.
The revival of Birdie the Early Bird taps into a broader trend of renewed interest in McDonald's nostalgic characters. Birdie, previously depicted as a cheerful and creative member of the McDonaldland cast alongside characters like Ronald McDonald and Grimace, is being reintroduced to both long-time fans and a new generation.
"As a world-first, Birdie's Brekkie Meal brings Birdie's optimism, playful spirit and unmistakable pink aesthetic to Macca's breakfast menu for the very first time," said Tobi Fukushima, Acting Marketing Director of Menu for McDonald's Australia. He added that the company aimed to introduce the character to both nostalgic customers and new Australian audiences.
The campaign extends beyond the menu, with McDonald's releasing an original Birdie theme song inspired by 2000s pop music and cartoon themes on Spotify on August 26. A separate "Birdie's Brekkie Beats" playlist will feature the song along with covers and remixes by Australian artists and fans.
This initiative is part of a period of menu experimentation for McDonald's Australia, which has recently expanded its beverage offerings and reintroduced popular items. The company noted that the focus on nostalgia across various industries, including food and fashion, is being leveraged to connect with consumers who grew up with these characters and aesthetics.
