Wirral Council has removed a controversial traffic-calming road marking scheme in Birkenhead, a year after its installation, following widespread public criticism and a hefty price tag. The 170-yard-long markings, painted in various shades of orange on Grange Road West, were intended to slow traffic and create a more pleasant shopping environment. However, residents quickly nicknamed the street 'Wotsit Street' due to the markings' resemblance to the popular British snack.

The scheme, which cost approximately £300,000, has now been undone at the council's expense. The authority has not disclosed the cost of removing the markings. Residents have expressed frustration over the perceived waste of taxpayer money, with some calling the colorful design "gaudy and silly" and "completely pointless."

The project was part of a six-month trial that began after a public consultation. The council had awarded a £2.9 million contract to construction firm Graham for various revitalization projects in the area, part of which funded the road markings. At the time, the council stated the paint job would enhance the town center by reducing car clutter and creating a more inviting atmosphere for shoppers.

However, the council reversed its decision after receiving "significant concerns" from locals. One resident likened the markings to the work of artists Pollock and Dali having a child. While the distinctive road markings have been removed, the one-way system implemented as part of the redesign remains in place, as council officers determined it improved traffic flow.

Locals had unflatteringly compared the markings to the iconic British cheesy snack

Council leader Paula Basnett acknowledged that the road markings had "put Birkenhead on the map, for maybe the wrong reasons." She stated that the trial allowed the authority to gather valuable data to shape a more effective long-term solution for the area. The street furniture and planters that were part of the scheme are to be donated to local schools and community groups.
