A 14-year-old boy who killed eight people before dying by suicide in Thailand had taught himself how to use a gun by watching social media, according to police. The teenager's consumption of violent online content, combined with anxiety over his studies and personal conflicts, may have contributed to the deadliest shooting in Thailand in years.

Police have questioned 17 witnesses as they work to determine the motive behind the attack, which occurred in Nonthaburi province, bordering Bangkok. Authorities stated that the student at Debsirin Nonthaburi School first used a handgun, owned by his grandfather, to kill his grandparents at their home. He then proceeded to his school, where he opened fire on teachers and students.

Evidence collected by investigators includes the firearm used, cartridge cases, the shooter's mobile phone, and a knife found in his school bag. The teen's computer at home revealed access to violent content on social media platforms. Forensic officers noted that the gunshots were precise, hitting vital areas on the victims. Police have found no evidence that the shooter practiced at a firearms range, though a teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun that the student had ordered online.

Thailand's leader has pledged to enact new gun control legislation in the wake of the tragedy. The investigation into the 14-year-old's motive is ongoing.
