The Buddhist clergy in Thailand is once again embroiled in controversy following the recent exposure of a senior monk allegedly involved in a sex act captured on CCTV and accused of embezzling millions of dollars. Phra Wachirayan Wi, the 66-year-old abbot of the 14th-century Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, is facing accusations of misappropriating approximately £2 million intended for his monastery.

This incident follows a similar sex and extortion scandal involving senior monks last year, which intensified public calls for greater oversight of temple finances. The footage, widely broadcast on Thai media, shows Phra Wachirayan in his residence with a woman, sending shockwaves across the Buddhist-majority nation. In Thailand, monks adhere to vows of celibacy and renunciation of material possessions, yet this case adds to a series of scandals that have repeatedly drawn scrutiny to the clergy.

A History of Scandals

Over the years, Thailand's monks have been implicated in various illicit activities. These have ranged from possessing pornography and sex toys to large-scale extortion schemes and sex crimes against children. These recurring issues have led to growing public condemnation of the religious establishment.

A significant case from July 2025 involved Wilawan Emsawat, also known as Sika Golf, who was arrested for allegedly recording sexual encounters with senior monks and extorting them for close to £9 million. Police found approximately 80,000 photos and videos believed to be used in the blackmail plot. Emsawat claimed the relationships were consensual and the money was given willingly. She detailed relationships with monks, including the Chief Monk of Phichit Province, who allegedly gifted her luxury vehicles and substantial sums of money.

In another incident earlier this year, four monks were arrested at the Phrom Sunthon Monastery in Chonburi province after a police raid uncovered pornography, sex toys, a penis pump, and a list of prostitutes. Three of the monks also tested positive for methamphetamine. The abbot was found to be a Karen national without registered civil records. All four were defrocked. The raid was prompted by local complaints of drug and firearm use on temple grounds.

In November of the previous year, a monk named Chayut was arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography on his phone, following a tip-off from the U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Police seized his smartphones, which reportedly contained explicit material featuring minors. He admitted to downloading the material for sexual gratification.

Further compounding the issues, in 2018, a former monk named Wiraphon Sukphon was sentenced to 114 years for charges including fraud, money laundering, and computer crimes. Known as the 'jet set monk' for his extravagant lifestyle depicted in a 2013 YouTube video, he was defrocked and fled to the U.S. after allegations of rape and defrauding donors. He was extradited and later received an additional 16 years for raping a 14-year-old girl.

Beyond individual misconduct, large-scale drug smuggling has also affected the clergy. In April, 22 Sri Lankan monks returning from Thailand were arrested at Sri Lanka's main international airport with 242 pounds of cannabis, marking a significant drug bust.

In March, a monk in northeastern Thailand was defrocked and arrested after provincial officials found drugs and firearms in his hut following complaints from residents about alleged drug and alcohol use. A search of his hut uncovered two .22-calibre firearms, three BB guns, 41 rounds of ammunition, and methamphetamine. A urine test confirmed narcotics in his system.
