Kreigh Grapel-Barnette, 26, was killed in a head-on collision on I-480 in Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, while driving home from a friend's presentation in Cleveland. The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on September 27, 2026.

Her father, Kristopher Barnette, shared that the morning of her death had been marked by celebration. He had just informed his daughter about his new job as a bartender, and the two had shared a moment of joy, dancing in their kitchen. "Love you!" were the last words he spoke to her before she left for Cleveland.

Barnette recalled joking with his daughter about an AI rap album he created to prepare for his new role, with Grapel-Barnette playfully calling him a "nerd" but acknowledging his effort. "But you do get props for this," she told him.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Grapel-Barnette was driving her 2007 Toyota Yaris eastbound on I-480 when the vehicle veered left off the roadway and collided with a 2026 Subaru Outlander. Both Grapel-Barnette and the occupants of the Subaru were reportedly wearing seatbelts. Her family believes her shoe may have become lodged between the accelerator and brake pedals, causing her to swerve to avoid other vehicles.

Grapel-Barnette was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead due to her injuries. Her obituary describes her as someone who "packed tremendous life into her 26 years and leaves family and friends with the imprint of her love and vitality."

Her father has created a biographical archive to honor her memory, detailing her many accomplishments. From age four, she performed in a folk-punk band with her sister, and by age seven, she had co-founded her own record label. During college, she actively campaigned for refugee rights.

Grapel-Barnette is survived by her parents, Kristopher and Tangela Barnette, her sister Sydnie, her brother Mattox, and her grandparents, Arnold and Karen Barnette, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A stone-setting ceremony was held for her on November 1 at Foxfield Preserve in Wilmot, Ohio, followed by a celebration of life event that afternoon at a music venue in Akron, Ohio.

Grapel-Barnette formed a band with her sister at age 4 and co-founded a record label at age 7, which are two of the many music-related accomplishments under her belt
