Georgina Baillie, the granddaughter of Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs, has described Russell Brand as a "seriously unwell sex addict" following his recent conviction for rape and sexual assault. Brand, 51, was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court after a trial where victims' accounts spanned a decade between 1999 and 2009.
Baillie, who was 21 when she entered into a consensual relationship with Brand, detailed the profound personal toll the infamous "Sachsgate" incident took on her life. In 2008, Brand and co-presenter Jonathan Ross phoned her grandfather on air to leave messages boasting about Brand's sexual relationship with Baillie. The incident, broadcast on BBC Radio 2, led to a national scandal and a breakdown in Baillie's relationship with her grandfather, which lasted eight years.
"Justice has been served," Baillie told the Daily Mail. "Although he never raped or assaulted me as I have always said I didn't know what happened in the privacy of the rooms that the victims and Russell were in and their evidence was compelling. He has been found guilty and I now want Russell to right the wrongs." She expressed sadness and disappointment in Brand, stating, "I feel very sad and disappointed in him."
Baillie believes Brand's actions stem from addiction. "Russell Brand is a sex addict. It's obvious to me. That boy is seriously unwell," she said. "When I got into recovery from drugs and alcohol I learnt about this thing called cross-addiction, where you put the substance down and you pick up a behaviour. Now if my drug of choice was available three times a day in different bodies [ie Brand's sex addiction], I would go for it if I wasn't well, if I wasn't using the tools of recovery. Then I understand how that happens and yes, he is a sex addict."
However, she stressed that this diagnosis does not excuse his criminal behavior. "I'm a survivor of sexual assault myself and it's very disappointing to me that if he had his memory jogged, he couldn't just be a big boy, make the amends like you did for me? I know that he's capable of that," she added, referencing Brand's past financial support for her therapy and rehab.
Baillie hopes Brand will now make amends to his victims, suggesting that owning up to his actions would be the first step. "He's been found guilty. He needs to make the amends. Owning up would be the first part of the amends and the second part would be whatever measures are necessary to put these girls back together," she stated. "I want those victims to get some help. I really do."
The "Sachsgate" incident led to Brand and Ross resigning from their BBC Radio 2 shows. The BBC was fined £150,000 by media regulator Ofcom for the broadcast, which was described as "gratuitously offensive, humiliating and demeaning."
Baillie described the phone call as "slut shaming" and "bullying towards my grandfather." She recounted how the scandal contributed to her own struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. Brand reportedly paid for Baillie's six-month stint in a rehab facility in 2018, a gesture she acknowledges, though she relapsed afterward. She is now six years clean and works as an artist.
She eventually reconciled with her grandfather, Andrew Sachs, shortly before his death in 2016. "I said 'I'm really whole heartedly sorry about what happened and my part in it.' I can't control what other people do, only me. So, I cleaned up my side of the street as much as I could. And then he died," Baillie recalled.
Despite Brand's conviction and her empathy for his victims, Baillie stated she has no regrets about her past involvement with him. "We were pretty much seeing each other just for sex. It was a very casual relationship," she said. "He was seeing loads of women, and I knew that. I was never in any doubt whatsoever that I was one of many but I didn't really care at the time."
