Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Saturday that his personal data has been spread across the dark web, leaving him vulnerable to threats and intimidation. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni subsequently blamed pro-Russian hackers for the breach.
Tajani shared the information on social media, noting that cybercriminals have been disseminating his personal details and seeking additional information, thereby exposing him and his family to new threats. He added that the individuals responsible are offering payment for more details about him and his loved ones.
Meloni expressed solidarity with Tajani, stating that the publication of personal data is a serious concern that requires resolute action. The leak follows a series of other cyber incidents in Europe, including hoax bomb threats that disrupted flights, security threats against broadcasters, and attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems and drone incursions in the Black Sea.
Tajani, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, did not specify the exact nature of the leaked information but indicated that the cyber threat is ongoing. He asserted that he would not be intimidated and would continue to work to defend his ministry and Italy, strengthening cooperation to enhance collective security. While not directly naming those responsible for the cyberattack, the Italian government has consistently supported Ukraine.
