PC Alan Greer, a 47-year-old married father, took his own life on May 6, but Police Scotland did not disclose the extent of his crimes until two months later. The revelation has sent shockwaves through the force, with one source comparing the case to that of Wayne Couzens, a UK police officer convicted of murder.

Authorities have identified nine victims of Greer's criminal activity, which spanned 14 years. Five of the victims were sex workers, and in several instances, the assaults were so violent they constituted attempted murder. Greer had served for 17 years with Strathclyde Police and later Police Scotland, with an apparently unblemished record.

Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff stated that Greer had abused his power, targeting individuals he encountered during his duties. The investigation was triggered when a woman came forward in late 2025 to report that Greer had raped her in 2012. She had been a victim of a separate crime, and Greer had returned to her home under the guise of a follow-up police check before assaulting her.

Following her statement to anti-corruption officers on April 24, police raided Greer's home, seizing seven mobile phones and a laptop. Investigators recovered thousands of graphic sexual videos and images, indicating Greer had used hundreds of sex workers. The review of this material revealed that at least five women were raped or sexually assaulted, with some attacks qualifying as attempted murder. The recovered data also included secret photographs Greer had taken of female colleagues during training exercises.

Greer's colleagues were informed of his death via the force's intranet, only stating that he had died while suspended and under criminal investigation. The full scope of his crimes was not immediately apparent to his family, who were reportedly unaware of his double life.
