Leon Gillespie, 26, was fined approximately $269 (£200) after climbing onto the roof of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in Wales on June 6. The incident, which lasted about 50 minutes, involved Gillespie, wearing a black hooded costume and carrying a long blade, making noises and staring at individuals on the ground.
Gillespie, from Deganwy, was charged with causing a nuisance or disturbance without reasonable excuse on National Health Service grounds. He pleaded guilty to the charge on July 15. During his court appearance, Gillespie claimed his costume was intended to resemble a bird, not the Grim Reaper figure typically associated with death.
Notes from the court hearing also revealed that Gillespie had committed two shoplifting offenses prior to the hospital incident. He stole cat food and litter valued at approximately $50 from a pet store on March 26, and other goods from a supermarket on May 28. For these offenses, he was ordered to pay around $336 (£250).
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which manages the Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital, stated that it has a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, aggression, or nuisance on its sites. North Wales police confirmed Gillespie was charged with causing a nuisance on NHS grounds and refusing to leave when asked by an officer.
