A London councillor has publicly expressed his frustration with residents who engage in fly-tipping, sharing an impassioned video plea on TikTok. Independent Councillor Mehmood Mirza of Newham stood before illegally dumped household items, urging constituents to show more pride in their community and utilize the council's available waste disposal services.

Newham has grappled with fly-tipping for years, even being labeled London's 'filthiest borough' in 2021 after numerous incidents were reported in a single week. In response to the persistent issue, the council introduced a 'Wall of Shame' earlier this year, showcasing CCTV footage of suspected offenders. Residents who identify individuals captured on camera can receive a £100 reward.

Cllr Mirza, who leads the Newham Independents party, highlighted the availability of free bulky waste collection services. He explained that residents can book up to six free collections per year online. "You can't just blame Newham Council for everything," he stated in the video, gesturing towards the discarded items behind him. "You get three times a year, free collection. And if you see fly-tipping, please report it."

He was later seen documenting the dumped waste to report it to the council. Mayor of Newham, Forhad Hussain, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the council's commitment to cleaner streets and stronger action against illegal dumping.

Meanwhile, Hillingdon Council is also taking a firm stance against fly-tipping. Officials there have publicly shamed offenders through social media posts and warned of fines up to £1,000, with the possibility of prosecution. The borough recently crushed a vehicle linked to illegal dumping, demonstrating their commitment to enforcement. Councillor Adam Bennett of Hillingdon Council stressed that fly-tipping is damaging to the environment and communities, with no excuse given the availability of responsible disposal options.
