An 11-year-old boy, Seth Fulton, died from traumatic head injuries after being involved in a collision with a bus and a car in Derby, an inquest has heard. The incident occurred on the evening of April 17 on Nottingham Road in Chaddesden. Seth had been cycling on the pavement when he saw his mother on the opposite side of the street and decided to cross.
According to the inquest, Seth was struck by a bus, which propelled him into the path of a VW Polo car. He sustained critical injuries and died later that day at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. Susan Evans, coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, concluded that it had "not been safe" for Seth to attempt to cross the road and that neither the bus driver nor the car driver had sufficient time to avoid the collision. The coroner officially recorded the cause of death as a road traffic collision resulting in a traumatic head injury.
Seth was described by his family as a "sweet" child who "loved wildlife" and was adventurous. In a statement released by Derbyshire Police after his death, his parents shared that he "had a lust for life" and was known for his adventurous spirit. They noted his passion for skateboarding and BMX riding, his sense of humor, and his ability to connect with others, stating he was "fearless, very sociable and would speak to anyone." The family remembered him as a "lovely colourful lad, independent and cheeky," who was "caring and compassionate, impulsive and inquisitive."
