Lynda Cooper, a six-time winner at the prestigious Crufts dog show, has been permanently banned from all future Royal Kennel Club events following her conviction for 11 animal welfare offenses. The decision comes after authorities found more than 40 dogs and two litters of puppies living in squalor at her home in Pontypool, South Wales.
Torfaen County Borough Council was alerted to the conditions in July 2024 following a complaint. The RSPCA was also notified about concerns regarding illegal breeding, which were later confirmed as Cooper had bred dogs without a license. Initially denied entry to the property, council authorities and a veterinarian obtained a warrant a month later and discovered the dogs in deplorable conditions. Five dogs had to be euthaned due to their poor state, and two more died subsequently.
Video footage from the property revealed filth covering all surfaces, with emaciated dogs, their rib cages visible due to malnutrition, reacting to the presence of camera operators. The hounds were eventually removed by authorities, placed under the care of the charity Hope Rescue, and underwent rehabilitation and rehoming.
Cooper pleaded guilty to 11 welfare offenses, including causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the dogs' welfare needs. She received a 12-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, was ordered to pay £10,000 in council costs, and was banned from owning dogs for a decade. Her defense counsel stated that Cooper had "spiralled" following a bereavement, with the neglect attributed to a loss of control rather than malicious intent.
Hope Rescue described the case as one of their most distressing, noting the dogs' severe underweight condition, advanced dental disease, chronic ear infections, and mobility issues in older animals. Younger dogs were described as nervous and lacking life experience, requiring extensive support. Cooper's gun dog, Carlos, had previously won multiple awards at Crufts in 2016.
The Royal Kennel Club confirmed Cooper's permanent disqualification from all its activities and registrations, including participation in and attendance at Crufts. The lifetime disqualification officially took effect on July 21, 2026.
