An international airline crew member has been charged with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than $500,000 worth of heroin into Australia. The 26-year-old Thai national, who was working on an international flight, arrived at Melbourne Airport on June 25.
Australian Border Force (ABF) officers selected the woman for screening, and her luggage, consisting of 12 tote bags, raised concerns during X-ray examination. A subsequent search revealed a white powder hidden within the lining of the bags, which preliminary tests indicated was heroin.
The discovery led ABF officers to alert the Australian Federal Police (AFP), who arrested the woman at the airport. The AFP has charged her with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug. Each offense carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment.
The woman was remanded in custody the following day and is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 14. AFP Acting Commander Simone Butcher stated that authorities maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards individuals who exploit positions of trust to traffic drugs. ABF Commander Clint Sims noted that criminal organizations are increasingly targeting airline staff as 'trusted insiders' to circumvent Australia's border controls.
