Zoe Marshall, wife of NRL star Benji Marshall, has publicly responded to criticism after sharing photos of a child-free weekend getaway with friends. A social media user, described by Marshall as a "condescending Karen," took issue with her celebrating "fun, frivolity and connection" and taking time for herself.
Marshall, 42, posted images and reflections on social media detailing her weekend, which included nature walks, yoga, meditation, and time spent with friends. She described the experience as "heaven" and a "meaningful life," while acknowledging her need for "recalibration."
"I cried, I felt so loved, we laughed and laughed. We danced. We feasted. It was heaven... this is what a meaningful life is to me. This weekend was exactly it," Marshall wrote in her post. "But I'm also a sensitive little soul who needs a moment of recalibration before she can get back into the world. And that's ok."
In response to the critical comment, which stated, "Oh my goodness. You poor thing. It sounds like your life is sooooooo hard," Marshall directly replied, "It sounds like you're being a condescending Karen."
Marshall later expanded on her stance, sharing to her Stories that she was unapologetic about her post triggering some individuals. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing well-being and self-care.
"Bah. People so triggered by my last post. The Karen condescending me... it's not 'poor me'. I am the example of what it looks like when you care for yourself over what other people think," Marshall stated. "When you prioritise your nervous system, when you know what you need. And you do that thing regardless of how it looks."
She encouraged others to live according to their own values rather than societal expectations, suggesting that those who feel attacked may be projecting their own limitations. "They may have created the prison but the door is wide open and you're staying inside," she wrote.
Marshall also shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a scam message from someone offering to set her up with a female friend, which she quipped about, stating, "I'm not here being a swinger."
Zoe and Benji Marshall have been married for 13 years, during which time they have relocated interstate and abroad with their two children. The couple renewed their vows in 2023. Benji Marshall retired as a player in 2021 and became the coach of the Wests Tigers in 2024. The family recently purchased a new home in Sydney for $4.75 million.
