Actor Zachary Levi has described California as a “failed state” that is “literally and figuratively on fire,” explaining his 2017 decision to leave the state and move to a ranch outside Austin, Texas. Levi, known for his roles in "Chuck" and the "Shazam!" franchise, is starring in the upcoming action-thriller "The Fix" alongside Liam Neeson.
Levi stated that his departure from California was not solely due to his disillusionment with the state but also stemmed from a long-held desire to reform the entertainment industry. He envisions creating a new studio model, akin to a modern United Artists, that is owned and operated by artists, eliminating middlemen and fostering a collaborative community. This vision includes not only a place to work but also residential spaces, educational opportunities for children, and sustainable living elements like organic farming.
This ambition is being realized through Wyldwood Studios, a $100 million film and lifestyle campus Levi is building on his 75-acre property in Bastrop County, Texas. The multi-phase project is designed as a hybrid production hub and creative retreat, featuring soundstages, production offices, housing, and wellness facilities. The initial two soundstages are slated to open in 2027.
Levi acknowledged leaving behind close personal ties and Southern California's climate but felt his calling to build this new venture was paramount. He finds Austin to be a great city, accepting its summer heat and winter cold as manageable.
In "The Fix," directed by Guy Moshe, Levi plays a former CIA operative seeking redemption. The film also stars Liam Neeson as Levi's mentor. Levi expressed his desire to take on darker, grittier roles, a departure from his previous work. Neeson praised the script and Levi's acting abilities, while Moshe noted Levi's suitability as an action star and his physical capabilities, honed by his outdoor lifestyle in Texas.
Actress Elnaaz Norouzi, who stars opposite Levi in "The Fix," described him as a "fantastic actor" and an "awesome" screen partner, noting the rare chemistry they shared during filming. "The Fix" is scheduled to premiere in theaters on September 11.
