The New York Yankees currently trail the first-place Tampa Bay Rays by six games in the American League East, their largest deficit of the season. This situation arises as the team awaits the return of key lineup players Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton, all of whom are currently sidelined.

Despite the standings, manager Aaron Boone stated Tuesday that the team's objectives remain unchanged. This sentiment is echoed by pitcher Gerrit Cole, who indicated that the six-game gap is statistically relevant but does not alter their divisional aspirations. "Our mindset is to win the division," Cole said, emphasizing that this focus will persist until elimination. He added that the team "haven’t moved the goalposts" and that the standard of accountability remains the same regardless of who is in the lineup.

Judge has been out since late May with a fractured rib, and there is no disclosed timeline for his return. Bellinger is reportedly progressing from a strained hamstring, and Stanton ran the bases on Tuesday. The absence of these three has impacted the Yankees' offense, which had previously built a 3½-game lead by June 17, before slipping further behind the Rays.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. acknowledged his role in the team's offensive struggles and expressed belief in their ability to catch Tampa Bay. "It's still a realistic goal to win the division," Chisholm said. "If they go on a losing streak and we do well, it would be there for us. It's baseball. Anything can happen."

The Yankees drew inspiration from their performance last season, when on August 23 they were in third place, 6½ games behind first-place Toronto and trailing the Red Sox. With only 12 games left at that point, they were still five games back of the lead before winning 11 of their last 12 games to close the gap to one game, though they ultimately fell short and were eliminated in the ALDS by Toronto.

"We just have to go day by day,'' Chisholm added. The Yankees are currently fighting to maintain second place in the division ahead of the Boston Red Sox.
