The New York Yankees are grappling with a severe slump, marked by a seven-game losing streak that has seen their performance falter across offense, defense, and pitching. The team's struggles have allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to capitalize, turning a previous three-game deficit into a 3.5-game lead atop the American League East.
Offensive Woes Persist
The team's offense has been particularly anemic during this skid. The Yankees have hit just .137 with a .191 on-base percentage and .230 slugging percentage over the past seven games. Their .421 OPS represents the worst seven-game stretch in franchise history. This offensive drought has occurred even with the anticipated return of players like Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon from the injured list.
Manager Aaron Boone described the team's situation as needing a day to "refresh the body and mind." Players acknowledge the pressure, with Cody Bellinger noting the remaining games before the All-Star break as an opportunity to "get rolling." However, the current offensive output suggests a collective effort to do too much, as noted by Aaron Judge. "It’s like, ‘Hey, just take your approach, take your at-bat,’ " Judge said.
The Yankees have struggled particularly against starting pitchers, hitting a dismal .093 with a .311 OPS against them. In a span of 46 innings, opposing starters have allowed only five runs (four earned) and 22 base runners while accumulating 54 strikeouts.
Key Players Underperforming
Amidst the team's struggles, key offensive players have also seen a decline in performance. Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger, who are expected to be All-Stars alongside Judge, have not produced at their usual level during the losing streak. Rice is 2-for-25, and Bellinger is 1-for-23 with two walks in the last seven games.
Bellinger expressed a need for improvement, stating, "I’m missing my pitches and then swinging at some pitcher’s pitches. I got to be better. I just got to continue working and continue to trust myself and trust my plan."
Defensive Lapses Emerge
Defensively, the Yankees have also encountered difficulties. The team has surrendered 17 unearned runs, matching the number of runs they have scored. Officially, 10 errors have been committed by players including Austin Wells, José Caballero, Bellinger, Amed Rosario, Oswaldo Cabrera, Ali Sánchez, Yerry De los Santos, and Cam Schlittler. This is a departure from their earlier performance, where they had managed the ball reasonably well.
The absence of Grisham and McMahon, who are expected back soon, has forced some players into less comfortable defensive positions. Boone acknowledged, "We haven’t done a good job of that this week. Even with some of the guys out, we should still be better at that."
Rotation and Standings Concerns
While not yet at the level of concern as the offensive and defensive issues, the starting rotation has experienced some subpar outings. Cam Schlittler and Gerrit Cole, who enters his Friday start with a 6.12 ERA in June, have both had recent starts that were considered "clunkers."
The Yankees' seven-game losing streak has occurred concurrently with a seven-game winning streak by the Rays, leading to a significant shift in the AL East standings. The upcoming four-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field will be crucial for the Yankees to attempt to regain ground.
