A private jet carrying nine people crashed Sunday afternoon in a South Florida neighborhood, erupting in a fireball about nine miles from Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach estate of former President Donald Trump.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the Learjet 60 crashed near Cresthaven, Florida, around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday. The aircraft had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and closed Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, urging the public to avoid the area. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue described the incident as an "Aircraft Incident" and warned it would be "an extended incident."
Video circulating on social media appeared to show the aircraft descending rapidly before impacting the ground and exploding.
