Allies of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are reportedly growing frustrated with the media and progressive base's treatment of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, feeling he is receiving a "kid-glove treatment" that contrasts with the scrutiny Ocasio-Cortez faced early in her career. The New York Times reported that some within Ocasio-Cortez's orbit feel Mamdani has been afforded more patience and deference from progressive activists and supporters than the congresswoman was during her own rise.

This sentiment stems from the intense scrutiny Ocasio-Cortez endured after defeating incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in 2018 at the age of 28. Rep. Nydia Velázquez told The Times that Ocasio-Cortez would likely face harsh criticism if she were to meet with corporate figures like Michael Bloomberg, suggesting a double standard.

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic Socialist, has seen a rapid ascent from political activist to mayor, gaining support from progressive and pro-Palestinian factions of the left. However, he has also faced criticism, including being labeled a "traitor" by pro-Palestine protesters in October and being confronted by demonstrators during a speech about ICE.

Mamdani has also drawn attention for his meetings with President Donald Trump, which some supporters question. Mamdani told The New York Times that these meetings were aimed at "deliver[ing] for this city," though he was unable to secure the release of an individual from ICE custody despite efforts.

Notably, both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash for laughing during a solemn moment at the 25th anniversary 9/11 memorial service. Former President Trump criticized their behavior as "terrible" and "inappropriate."
