The New York Yankees have announced a new multiyear sponsorship agreement with Polymarket, a prominent platform in the crypto-based prediction market industry. This partnership marks a significant step for the traditionally conservative baseball franchise, which has previously partnered with established sports betting companies.
Polymarket operates similarly to online sportsbooks, offering futures contracts on a wide range of events, from political outcomes to sports results. Users can wager on binary outcomes, such as "Will the Yankees win the World Series this October?" The platform, along with others like Kalshi, gained attention during the 2024 US Presidential race for its ability to forecast electoral results.
Unlike traditional sportsbooks, prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi identify as "exchanges" rather than "houses." They facilitate wagers between users rather than taking bets directly. This distinction means they often face fewer regulations and taxes, and can operate in markets where sports gambling is prohibited, such as California and Texas. Furthermore, prediction markets can accept users under the age of 21, a demographic typically excluded from state-sanctioned sports betting.
The Yankees' senior vice president of partnerships, Michael Tusiani, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We are excited to begin a relationship with Polymarket — Major League Baseball's prediction market partner." He added that the partnership aims to "elevate Polymarket's brand awareness both at Yankee Stadium and across our fan base" through signage and fan experience opportunities.
Polymarket's President of Sports Business Development, Ari Borod, also commented on the deal, saying, "We are proud to become a partner of one of the most iconic teams, not just in baseball, but in all of sports." He highlighted Yankee Stadium as a "natural home for Polymarket."
However, the partnership has drawn criticism. New York Attorney General Letitia James has voiced concerns, stating, "No matter what they call themselves, prediction markets like Kalshi are gambling platforms, plain and simple. By ignoring our laws, Kalshi is running an illegal operation and harming New Yorkers in the process." Kalshi has countered these claims, with spokesperson Elisabeth Diana asserting that "States can't just shut down a federally licensed exchange" and that such actions would "hurt New Yorkers, who would be driven offshore."
The agreement includes plans for enhanced fan experiences and premium hospitality opportunities at Yankee Stadium, though specific financial details of the sponsorship have not been disclosed. The Yankees have previously partnered with FanDuel, Bally Bet, Draft Kings, and MGM Resorts.
