A rock concert scheduled for Thursday evening at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Virginia was canceled after a worker was fatally crushed by a tour bus.
U.S. Park Police responded to the venue around 5 p.m. and found the worker trapped beneath a tour bus in a nearby parking lot. Authorities stated that a support apparatus on the bus failed, causing it to fall onto the worker. The band Squeeze was slated to perform at 7:30 p.m. that night.
"There was an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park," the venue said in a social media post. "Out of respect, tonight's show has been canceled."
Squeeze issued a statement expressing their shock and sadness. "We will work with the promoter and venue regarding the possibility of rescheduling the show and will communicate further information to ticket holders as soon as it is available," the band said. "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event."
The identity of the deceased worker has not been released by Park Police. The incident left some concertgoers who had already arrived shaken, with many lingering in the parking lot after the cancellation announcement.
"It was horrible when we found out that happened," attendee Debbie Daniel told FOX 5 DC. "We saw the emergency vehicles come in. Figured something serious had happened because there was like 15 or more vehicles, but yeah it was very tragic."
Another fan, Eric Anderson, expressed understanding for the decision to cancel, stating, "Especially from what we're starting to understand about the circumstances, the show can't go on. And we understand that."
