Rebekah Swatton, 26, from Powick, Worcestershire, has saved £18,000 in seven months with the goal of traveling the world. Her savings were accumulated through selling items on Vinted, working extensive overtime, and selling her car.
Swatton's motivation for a lifestyle change stems from the death of her boyfriend five years prior, an event she described as making her realize that "nothing in life is certain." This realization prompted her to reassess her relationship with material possessions.
Last March, Swatton took a sabbatical from her job at Lloyds Banking Group for a six-month backpacking trip through Australia, Africa, and Asia. Upon her return in September, she found she needed fewer of the possessions she had left behind.
This experience led to a significant shift in her approach to life. She sold her car for £2,500, worked up to 20 hours of overtime weekly in her £30,000 banking role, and sold over 200 items on Vinted, ranging from clothing to accessories and trinkets. She also moved back in with her parents to reduce living expenses.
These efforts allowed her to save approximately £18,000 for an open-ended trip to South America. She has booked a flight to Guatemala and plans to travel through countries including Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile over the next six months.
Swatton stated that she felt happier living without extra material things during her previous travels and wants to live her life to the fullest. She intends for her next journey to be permanent, with no immediate plans to return to the UK.
