A woman reported that she was sexually assaulted at a fraternity house near the University of Chicago campus early Sunday morning, according to Chicago police and an alert issued by the university.
The alleged assault occurred around 2 a.m. in a residence in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The 21-year-old woman stated that a male sexually assaulted her inside the home and subsequently transported herself to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
The University of Chicago's alert indicated that the incident took place during a party at a fraternity house. Area One detectives are currently investigating the incident, and Chicago police have not released further details at this time.
Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) Headquarters released a statement on Sunday, October 11, 2026, acknowledging their awareness of the incident. The fraternity stated that it has been collaborating with chapter leadership, the university administration, and local law enforcement. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the chapter has been instructed to refrain from holding any events or programs.
AEPi's statement emphasized its core values, including treating all individuals with dignity, opposing sexual assault and harassment, and holding members accountable as "Brothers' Keepers." The fraternity's membership conditions strictly prohibit any behavior considered sexual harassment or assault, such as repeated propositioning, coercive pressure, unwanted touching, and physical violence.
The fraternity also noted that all AEPi members undergo mandatory training on these standards, which are reinforced through chapter visits and national events. Violations can lead to expulsion. AEPi indicated that it provides oversight and support to its chapters regardless of university recognition.
While the investigation is in its early stages, AEPi urged against jumping to conclusions and requested similar restraint from the media. The fraternity expressed empathy for the victim, stating that no one should have to fear for their safety and well-being at any campus event, including those hosted by fraternities.
