A woman in Alaska was hospitalized on Thursday following a bear attack outside her Kenai home. The incident happened as she was leaving the house with her two dogs.

According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the woman encountered a brown bear and its cubs around 4:54 a.m. While one of her dogs managed to return inside the home, the other ran into the front yard. The woman retrieved a shotgun from the house and fired several rounds to deter the animals.

The adult bear then attacked the woman on her front deck. Another individual at the home reportedly scared the bear and its cubs away by screaming. The victim sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an Anchorage-area hospital. Her condition has not been immediately released.
