A woman has admitted to misusing her 75-year-old father's disabled parking badge to go shopping in London. The driver was filmed returning to her black Mercedes, parked on Windsor Road in Ealing, to find it had received a parking ticket.
Video footage showed the woman returning to her vehicle with a shopping bag before a local resident, Mark Uddin, asked why she was using a man's blue badge. The woman, who admitted she was "in the wrong," replied that it was her father's and that she was "going to pick him up."
According to the Department for Transport, it is illegal to display a blue badge if the holder is not travelling with them or being picked up from the parking location. The badge must not be lent to friends or family for their own use, and offenses can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. The driver stated, "I won't do it again, I'm sorry."
Mr. Uddin, known on social media as Walking Marky, told the Daily Mail that he observed the woman park, place the badge in the window, and then leave. He noted that the badge belonged to an elderly man. After approximately 20 minutes, the woman returned to her car as a parking warden issued a ticket. Mr. Uddin highlighted that parking at Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre costs only £2.50 for two hours, calling the misuse of the badge "ridiculous."
This incident marks the second time in recent days that a blue badge has been reportedly misused on Windsor Road. On August 29, a man was seen using a 74-year-old woman's blue badge to park his grey Toyota. When questioned by Mr. Uddin, the man reportedly gathered his belongings and left without comment.
Ealing councillor Dominic Moffitt emphasized that the blue badge scheme is a crucial service for disabled individuals. "Blue badge abuse is not a victimless crime and it will not be tolerated in Ealing borough," Moffitt stated. "Where we receive allegations of blue badge misuse, like this, they are carefully considered and would form part of investigations into potential prosecution."
