The Nathan Hale High School football program in West Allis, Wisconsin, is navigating a significant coaching upheaval as seven coaches have resigned just weeks into the 2026 season. This development follows an announcement on August 6 by Principal Matthew Lesar, informing parents that several coaches were placed on administrative leave pending a confidential personnel investigation.

In his statement, Lesar assured that there were no concerns regarding the safety or well-being of student-athletes, citing district policy for the investigation into a personnel matter. While the exact reasons for the resignations remain undisclosed, reports suggest the investigation centers on messages exchanged in a coach group chat shared with school administrators.

Following the resignations, only four of the program's original eleven coaches remain. The team's defensive coordinator, Cody Schumitsch, has stepped in as the interim head coach. The sudden departure of the majority of the coaching staff has left the school community in a state of disbelief.

Shane Cohen, father of senior quarterback Colton, described the situation as "complete, utter shock," noting the dedication of the former coaches. Despite the puzzling circumstances, players are reportedly focused on the upcoming season, aiming to demonstrate a strong performance for Hale football in 2026.
