William Shatner, the iconic actor known for his role as Captain Kirk in "Star Trek," and his youngest daughter, Melanie, simultaneously confronted stage 4 cancer. Shatner, 95, revealed that he battled malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain, while Melanie, 61, underwent treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer that had metastasized to her lymph nodes.

Melanie shared in an interview with People that her father's resilience during his own illness provided her with strength during her chemotherapy treatments three years ago. She recounted a moment of extreme distress, telling her father, "I think I'm dying." Shatner immediately came to her home, offering a comforting embrace and reassurance. "This is going to be a blip in your life. You're going to get through this, and it'll be a memory," he told her.

Shatner was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma in June 2023, with the cancer having spread to his lungs and brain. He had previously revealed his diagnosis in 2024. Melanie discovered a lump on her breast in July 2022, initially mistaking it for a bug bite. Subsequent testing confirmed breast cancer that had already spread.

During her treatment, Melanie noted her father's unwavering resolve. "He wouldn't stop his life. He kept working and moving forward," she said. Shatner also offered financial support, telling his daughter, "I do not want you to worry. Just send me the bills." He later humorously remarked about her need to recover, "You've got to get well. We're going to be in the poorhouse!"

Melanie underwent extensive treatment, including multiple rounds of chemotherapy, HER2-targeted therapies, a double mastectomy, and 30 radiation therapy treatments over 18 months. It was during the final stages of her treatment that she noticed a concerning lump on Shatner's cheek. Although initially dismissed by a family doctor as a blocked salivary gland, Shatner sought a second opinion from a plastic surgeon. He subsequently had surgery to remove the facial tumor, followed by two years of immunotherapy.

Both father and daughter were confirmed to be cancer-free by late 2024. Melanie described Shatner's emotional reaction to the news, stating he cried tears of joy, marking the third time she had heard him cry in her life.

Shatner, who played Captain Kirk from 1966 to 1969 in the original "Star Trek" series, also reprised the role in subsequent films and the animated series. His other notable roles include the titular character in "T.J. Hooker" and a role in the 2000 comedy "Miss Congeniality."
