Smoke from Canadian wildfires has settled over the northeastern United States, raising air quality concerns just days before the World Cup final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The haze has prompted local authorities to advise residents to limit strenuous outdoor activities.

On Thursday, air quality in New Jersey was rated as 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' by several monitoring platforms. Experts warn that the combination of poor air quality and high temperatures could pose significant risks to both players and the expected 80,000 spectators. Dr. Vin Gupta, a pulmonologist and board member of the American Lung Association, described the situation as a 'very powerful and dangerous one-two punch to the human body,' emphasizing the critical need to maintain low core body temperatures.

Gupta suggested that additional hydration breaks might be necessary during the match to protect the athletes, despite potential opposition to implementing more breaks. He also advised individuals with health issues, particularly those who are immunocompromised, to consider staying home and potentially selling their tickets if the air quality remains poor on Sunday. An estimated 50,000 additional fans are expected to watch the game from Central Park in Manhattan.

Wildfire smoke from northern Canada has become a recurring summer issue across large parts of the United States in recent years. New York Governor Kathy Hochul acknowledged the unhealthy air conditions on Thursday, urging people to stay indoors.

However, there is a possibility of improvement before the final. AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva indicated that a cold front expected over the weekend could help dissipate the smoke. "It's going to rain a lot on Saturday, so that should dissipate a lot of the smoke," DaSilva told Reuters. "Sunday morning, I think we're going to be seeing a cold front come through the area and it should kick out any remaining smoke that we're seeing."

DaSilva suggested that while limiting outdoor activities on Saturday is advisable, the risk may be lower by the match's kickoff at 3 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday as the smoke is expected to move out of the area.
