Carly Korwin, the widow of former Team USA triathlete Spencer Korwin, expressed her grief and described her husband as the love of her life during a funeral service on Sunday. Spencer Korwin, 38, a married father of two from Manhattan, was found dead on Wednesday under the dock of The Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island, where the family was on vacation.
"This is a nightmare. This is the worst day of my life. I can’t accept that this is real and that Spencer is not going to come home," Carly Korwin said through sobs, according to the New York Post. She recalled their relationship, which began after both graduated from Syracuse University, as a "beautiful and special once-in-a-lifetime type of love."
Spencer Korwin was remembered as a dedicated father and a prankster. His wife shared that he would often leave notes for her and their daughters, Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1, and had set up automated texts to remind her of his love and praise her as a mother and wife. "He was filled with surprises and hugs just because," she said. "I know the girls will never stop missing him, and he will forever be their hero."
The couple had discussed having more children, a future now unrealized. Carly Korwin stated, "We always said forever isn’t long enough. And I will never be able to make sense as to why this incredible life we built together, filled with happiness and so much love, was ripped away from us in an instant."
The Pridwin Hotel has posted signs cautioning guests not to swim. Spencer Korwin was a triathlete and wellness entrepreneur. He was identified as a former Team USA triathlete and a Manhattan resident and father of two.
