Francesca, 63, once held a strong aversion to cosmetic procedures, believing in aging gracefully. However, after being widowed in 2023 following a 40-year marriage, she experienced profound grief and a shift in her perspective.
Her self-consciousness became focused on a deep vertical line above her upper lip, which she felt amplified her grieving appearance. "Every time I looked in the mirror, my eyes were drawn straight to it," she recalled. While not seeking to look younger or different, Francesca desired to "soften something that affected my confidence" and to "look like me on a good day."
Following a recommendation, she consulted Dr. Sabika Karim of Skin Medical in July 2024. Initially nervous, Francesca found Dr. Karim's calm and reassuring demeanor eased her anxieties. The initial treatment involved a small amount of filler, costing £400. "Despite my anxiety beforehand, the experience was far easier than I’d imagined," Francesca stated. "I had no bruising, just a little swelling that settled after a few days."
The results were subtle yet impactful. The line above her lip softened, marionette lines became less visible, and her lips appeared slightly fuller, all while maintaining her natural appearance. "I still looked like myself, just fresher," she said.
This period also involved significant personal rebuilding. Francesca lost three stone through diet and exercise, feeling fitter and more energetic. However, the weight loss left her face looking hollowed, prompting a second consultation with Dr. Karim in March 2026. This time, the focus was on restoring lost facial volume. Dr. Karim suggested a plan involving dermal filler to contour her cheekbones and jawline and soften lines around her mouth.
This subsequent treatment, costing £2,000, yielded immediate and natural results. An acquaintance commented that she looked "well-rested," a compliment that affirmed the discreet nature of the work. "The results were immediate and natural," the notes state.
Dr. Karim has observed a notable increase in mature patients seeking subtle enhancements. "I am seeing a lot more people who are turning to aesthetic treatments later in life, in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s," she said, noting that these treatments address signs of aging and volume loss from weight loss.
Francesca views her treatments as an investment in herself, enabling her to embrace new experiences with confidence. She has since traveled, pursued new hobbies like salsa dancing and metalwork, and even worked as a television extra. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the importance of feeling comfortable in one's skin, stating, "We only get one life – and we deserve to live it feeling as good as we possibly can."
