Hundreds of masked members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front marched through parts of Washington, D.C., on Saturday, July 4, ahead of Independence Day festivities. The group stated on social media that approximately 400 members participated, and Reuters photographers observed hundreds dressed in Patriot Front attire traveling on D.C. Metro trains.

Videos circulating on social media and the group's Telegram channel depicted the marchers, clad in khaki pants, caps, blue shirts, white face coverings, and sunglasses, moving to the beat of drums near the U.S. Capitol and Union Station. Many carried the group's flag, Confederate flags, and variations of the U.S. flag, at times chanting "Reclaim America."

Around midday, the group boarded Metro trains and disembarked in New Carrollton, Maryland, a suburb northeast of Washington. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed it was monitoring the group's activities, noting no arrests, complaints, or calls for assistance related to the march. A spokesperson stated the MPD recognizes individuals' rights to peaceful expression while prioritizing public safety.

Patriot Front, which is known for its uniforms, face masks, and flash-mob-style demonstrations, emerged in 2017 after the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the group split from the white supremacist organization Vanguard America, which was central to that Charlottesville protest.

A manifesto published on Patriot Front's website declares that "Democracy has failed this once great nation" and calls for a "hard reset" to "return to the traditions and virtues of our forefathers," whom the group identifies as European settlers.

John Cohen, who previously held counterterrorism and intelligence roles within the Department of Homeland Security, stated that Patriot Front attempts to present itself as mainstream while promoting "white supremacist and anti-immigrant ideological belief systems." Cohen added that the group's willingness to demonstrate publicly on national holidays illustrates the ongoing issues with white supremacy in the country.

Luke Baumgartner, a research fellow at George Washington University's Program on Extremism, noted that while the group's symbolism evokes patriotism through American flag colors, its logo resembles the "fascio" insignia of Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party. Baumgartner described Patriot Front as a white supremacist organization that uses public appearances like marches and protests to spread its message that America is intended for white people exclusively.
