The White House faced significant backlash after appearing to attribute the calm start to the 2026 hurricane season to former President Donald Trump.
Chris Martz, a meteorologist who has described himself as the “anti-Greta Thunberg,” noted the absence of hurricanes in the North Atlantic Ocean so far this year, stating that "history has been made." The White House’s Rapid Response 47 account on X subsequently quote-posted Martz’s message with the remark, “Thank you, President Trump!”
The post drew immediate criticism online. One widely shared reaction described the White House’s comment as “absolute cult-brained dipshittery” for crediting a politician for the weather and suggested it demonstrated desperation.
This incident follows a federal judge's ruling that the Trump administration had acted unlawfully by ordering a 50% reduction in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) workforce. Trump has previously advocated for the dissolution of FEMA and argued that disaster response should be a greater responsibility of individual states.
