The White House has formally requested $87.6 billion from Congress, primarily to replenish Department of Defense funds following the U.S. war against Iran, but also to address domestic agricultural needs and the Ebola crisis in Africa. The supplemental spending request was submitted by the Office of Management and Budget on Wednesday.

The request arrives at a politically challenging moment, as a majority of lawmakers have expressed opposition to further U.S. military engagement. This comes shortly after President Donald Trump reportedly engaged in a contentious exchange with Republican senators regarding a war powers resolution aimed at halting hostilities.

The largest portion of the request, $67 billion, is designated for the Department of Defense. The administration cited urgent needs related to Operation Epic Fury, including funding for military personnel, readiness expenses, and operational costs to restock military supplies. The supplemental request also encompasses aid for American farmers, assistance for the Ebola crisis in Africa, and funding for domestic restoration projects, including those in Washington, D.C.

"I urge the Congress to take action on these important and urgent requests as soon as possible," stated OMB Director Russ Vought in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson.
