Couples planning their weddings are not the only ones who can sense when a marriage might be doomed from the start. Wedding industry professionals, including photographers, planners, and officiants, frequently witness behaviors and hear statements that serve as red flags, indicating a union may not stand the test of time.

One wedding photographer with 20 years of experience recounted a moment when the bride's parents remarked in their speech, "You weren’t who we envisioned for our daughter, but you have children together, so I guess we’re stuck with you." In another instance, a groom confided in a friend that the wedding was a "wedding of convenience," assuring his friend not to worry about the relationship's future.

The emotional state of the couple and their interactions with guests and each other can also be telling. Several professionals noted instances where one partner seemed visibly upset or disengaged throughout the ceremony. One bridesmaid cried continuously from makeup application through the reception, showing no interest in the groom and only wanting photos with the bride. This couple separated eight months later, and the bride eloped with the bridesmaid.

Communication and respect, or the lack thereof, between the couple are often evident. A wedding videographer observed a groom who was distracted by his young children during the bride's vows and responded with a laugh when she finished. The groom admitted he was "gonna wing it" and delivered notably short vows.

Financial or logistical issues during the wedding planning or on the day itself can also highlight underlying problems. A former employee at a bridal shop recalled a bride who, after trying on $3,000 worth of dresses, was denied a store credit card and, when denied financial help by the groom, had a public outburst.

Some alarming incidents involve the behavior of the wedding party or guests, which can reflect on the couple's judgment or the health of their relationships. One photographer described a groom who had been on a 24-hour cocaine binge and was visibly impaired during the ceremony. Another wedding videographer shared an account where the bride was heavily intoxicated after the ceremony and was seen disappearing for 40 minutes with the saxophonist.

In some cases, the foundation of the marriage itself is questioned. A minister asked couples about their relationship, and one bride and groom's answers exclusively focused on how the other partner could serve their own needs, prompting the minister to question the groom's commitment.

Professionals in the wedding industry often develop a keen sense for these warning signs. One vendor explained that they would decline a wedding if they observed significant conflict during the initial meeting. "Red flags aren't just for the people in the relationship," the vendor stated. "Vendors, see them and heed them."
