The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has publicly withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino's bid to remain FIFA president for the 2027-2031 term. Wales becomes the first national football association to take this step.
The decision follows Infantino's now-scrapped proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms. This plan had generated significant criticism, with UEFA reportedly threatening to boycott FIFA events, including the World Cup. Both UEFA and CONCACAF, representing football in North, Central America, and the Caribbean, issued statements on Saturday expressing concerns about FIFA's leadership following the withdrawal of Infantino's plan.
The FAW stated that "recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement" have led to a loss of confidence in Infantino's ability to lead world football. The association added that failing to prioritize the best interests of football is unacceptable.
