Volkswagen Unveils Most Powerful GTI Yet: An All-Electric ID.3 GTI

Volkswagen has introduced its most powerful GTI ever, the all-electric ID.3 GTI, marking a significant evolution for the iconic hot hatch badge. This new variant is not only the most potent GTI to date but also the first to feature rear-wheel drive.

The ID.3 GTI delivers a maximum output of 322bhp from its rear-mounted electric motor, surpassing the previous most powerful petrol model, the Golf GTI Edition 50, by 1bhp. The electric hot hatch accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds, placing it among the quickest VW hot hatches and slightly faster than the standard Golf GTI.

This marks the second instance of Volkswagen applying the celebrated GTI badge to an electric vehicle, following the earlier confirmation of a GTI version for the ID.Polo. The move signifies Volkswagen's strategy to transition its renowned nameplates and performance badges to its new generation of electric cars, a shift accelerated by the upcoming ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales.

The ID.3 GTI will replace the GTX as the performance flagship for Volkswagen's electric hatchback range. Power is supplied by the ID.3 line-up's largest battery, a 79kWh unit. While the official range is estimated at 376 miles, this figure is unlikely to be maintained during spirited driving characteristic of a hot hatch. The vehicle supports fast charging, capable of replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes at speeds up to 183kW.

Volkswagen asserts that the ID.3 GTI will retain the core characteristics of a true GTI, including its dynamic driving experience, alongside the practicality and everyday usability expected by customers. A unique GTI driving mode, activated via a steering wheel button, enhances performance by unleashing full power and enabling launch control. This mode also sharpens suspension, increases steering weight, and bathes the cabin in a red light, complemented by a synthetic combustion-engine soundtrack to evoke the sensory experience of traditional hot hatches.

Visually, the ID.3 GTI will be distinguished by sportier bumpers, 20-inch alloy wheels, and classic GTI color options, including silver, black, red, and white, along with an exclusive grey for this model. Inside, the cabin features a contemporary take on the traditional GTI tartan upholstery, and the digital instrument display offers a retro setting that mimics the dials of the original Mk1 Golf GTI.

The ID.3 GTI is set to launch first in Germany, with UK customer deliveries anticipated in early 2027. Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but it is expected to be in a similar range to the Cupra Born VZ, which starts at approximately £45,995.
