Multiple gunmen remain at large hours after five people were shot at Virginia State University in an incident that occurred early Saturday morning, just as new students were arriving on campus.
The shooting occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. near the university's Quad Annexes, located outside campus dormitories. None of the victims died in the attack, but one individual was initially reported to be in life-threatening condition and later upgraded to critical condition. The other four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
At least one of the wounded was confirmed to be a student, who was among those with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital. Police and university officials have not publicly identified the victims.
The incident took place as Virginia State University's academic year is set to begin. Many students had recently participated in the university's 'New Trojans Experience' for incoming students, and residence halls opened a week prior. Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday.
University police and Chesterfield County officers responded to the scene and discovered the individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities have not released any information about the suspects or indicated if any arrests have been made.
In a statement, the university confirmed that the shooting involved multiple suspects. Police indicated they do not believe there is an immediate threat to the campus community, and a lockdown has since been lifted. VSU Police stated they will maintain an increased presence on campus as the investigation progresses.
Local leaders expressed their concern. Delegate Rozia Henson, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and an alumna of VSU, called the news heartbreaking. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger also offered her prayers for a swift recovery for those injured and thanked the first responders.
Virginia State University has experienced previous incidents of gun violence. The university reported five people wounded in three separate attacks in 2023, and one person was killed near campus last year.
