A viral video circulating on social media platform X shows an individual repeatedly interfering with a Tesla Cybercab by jumping into its path, forcing the autonomous vehicle to brake abruptly. The incident, captured in Austin, Texas, has raised concerns among observers about the potential for pranksters or individuals to disrupt the operation of driverless vehicles and whether such actions could lead to accidents.
The video, which has garnered over 1.3 million views, depicts a person entering the street in front of the Cybercab and then returning to the sidewalk. The robotaxi is shown braking multiple times before eventually stopping in the middle of the road with its hazard lights activated. A human-driven car is then seen navigating around the stopped Cybercab.
This event is among the initial challenges emerging since Tesla began deploying its driverless Cybercabs in Austin. These particular models are notable for lacking traditional controls like steering wheels and brake pedals, and do not have an immediate way for human intervention in emergencies.
Jesse Cohen, a senior financial analyst at Investing.com, shared the video and expressed apprehension, stating it could become a "big issue going forward with Tesla robotaxis." Cohen suggested that individuals could "continue to do this with zero accountability and delay peoples’ rides and cause accidents."
Other social media users echoed these concerns, with some speculating that increased anti-Tesla sentiment or attention-seeking behavior could lead to traffic incidents. One user commented, "The types of people who do this are very dumb. Sadly, posting a video will likely give more dumb people ‘an idea.’" Calls for the Austin Police Department to address the situation have also been made.
Tesla has been testing its robotaxis in various locations, with previous models typically equipped with standard driving controls and an on-board human driver. The Austin deployment represents the company's first fully autonomous rollout in the city. Following this debut, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced an audit to verify Tesla's claims that its new Cybercab meets federal safety standards.
The Cybercab is considered a significant component of Tesla's long-term strategy, particularly amidst challenges with declining electric car sales. CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the company aims to evolve into a broader technology firm with a focus on artificial intelligence and robotics.
