The Minnesota Vikings have selected veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to start over rookie J.J. McCarthy, a decision announced Tuesday by head coach Kevin O'Connell.
O'Connell stated that the competition for the starting role has concluded, and Murray will receive full repetitions with the first-team offense leading up to the regular season opener on September 13. O'Connell and general manager Nolan Teasley informed both players of the decision earlier in the day.
Murray, who enters his eighth NFL season, brings significant experience with 87 career starts for the Arizona Cardinals, two Pro Bowl selections, and over 3,000 rushing yards. His established NFL resume was a key factor in O'Connell's choice.
"It’s just the appropriate time now to allow our team and everybody clarity for exactly the direction we’re moving going forward," O'Connell said. He noted moments where Murray demonstrated a strong understanding of the Vikings' offensive scheme, timing, and rhythm, along with his explosive playmaking ability and efficiency in managing drives.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, will serve as the primary backup. He missed his entire rookie season in 2023 due to a knee injury sustained in the preseason. Following the departure of Sam Darnold in free agency, McCarthy had been positioned to compete for the starting role.
O'Connell expressed confidence in McCarthy's future with the team, stating, "Look, he’s a young player with a whole bunch of outstanding things in his future." He added that McCarthy's long-term development remains a key part of the organization's vision.
Both Murray and McCarthy are expected to play in the Vikings' first exhibition game against the New York Giants on Saturday. Carson Wentz will be the third quarterback on the depth chart, followed by Max Brosmer.
Murray signed a one-year contract with the Vikings at the veteran minimum salary. He becomes the fourth different player to start at quarterback for the Vikings in as many season openers, following Kirk Cousins, Darnold, and McCarthy.
