A vigil intended to honor a 16-year-old boy who died in a motorbike crash on August 24 escalated into disorder, with police reporting that fireworks were thrown at officers and a vehicle was set alight. The incident occurred Monday in Cramlington, Northumberland, where dozens gathered for a balloon release and fireworks ceremony.
The teenager died at the scene after his Yamaha motorbike collided with a Volkswagen Polo. A 24-year-old man on the same bike sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. The driver of the Volkswagen remained at the scene to cooperate with police.
The memorial event reportedly took a turn as masked bikers arrived. Social media footage depicted groups of riders on electric bikes and motorcycles, some described as joyriding on a sports field and speeding through residential streets. Captions on these videos alluded to honoring the deceased teenager.
Northumbria Police deployed multiple units, including a drone team, to the scene. Officers seized four Sur-Ron electric bikes and issued warnings concerning vehicles used for anti-social behavior. A police statement indicated a rise in such reports before and after the balloon release.
"We understand that people will want to come together to remember those who have died, and we ask that they do so safely, respectfully and within the law," stated Superintendent Michelle Robson. "Where such events are used as an opportunity to carry out offences, we are committed to taking action against those responsible."
Police are investigating the disturbances and are seeking CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage from the public to identify those involved in the behavior, which included fireworks being thrown at officers and a vehicle being torched. No injuries were reported among the public or police.
This incident follows a similar event last week in Haswell, County Durham, where cars were set ablaze during a vigil for young men killed in a road collision.
