Shane Smith, the co-founder and former CEO of Vice Media, is reportedly in the process of shopping a tell-all book about his experiences with the once-dominant digital media company. Publishing sources told Page Six that the book will cover the company's significant rise and subsequent bankruptcy.

Smith, known for his flamboyant persona and ambitious business ventures, built Vice from a small punk magazine in Montreal into a global media conglomerate. At its peak in 2017, Vice was reportedly valued at nearly $6 billion. However, by 2023, the company filed for bankruptcy, a move attributed to a broader market correction for digital media companies that had flourished in the previous decade.

The book's narrative is expected to explore the "wild ride" of Vice's ascent and crash, as well as the current efforts to relaunch the Vice News banner. Smith has also recently launched a podcast titled "Shane Smith Has Questions" in 2024.

During its operational heyday, Vice was recognized for its globe-trotting news scoops, including embedding reporters with groups like the Islamic State and accompanying NBA star Dennis Rodman on a trip to North Korea. The company had 34 bureaus worldwide and produced a "Vice News" show for HBO.

However, the company's history is also marked by controversy. In 2017, Vice leaders issued a public apology following a New York Times investigation that detailed allegations of a "toxic environment" for women within the company. The statement acknowledged "cultural elements from our past, dysfunction and mismanagement" that fostered inappropriate behavior and a detrimental "boy's club" atmosphere.

Sources indicate that Smith is also preparing for a relaunch of the Vice News brand. Smith, who was known for his active social life and connections with influential figures, has also made significant personal property transactions. In 2021, he listed his Los Angeles estate for $50 million. He is reportedly divorced and has been seen in Malibu.
