Veteran Broadcaster John Humphrys Questions Royal Family's Role in New Documentary

Veteran broadcaster John Humphrys is presenting a new Channel 4 documentary titled 'The Royals: Time to Go?', which examines the position of the Royal Family and proposes the idea of electing a president as the head of state. Humphrys, a long-serving figure at the BBC, expressed his belief that the citizens of the United Kingdom should have the ability to choose their leaders.

In an interview with BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, Humphrys stated that while he holds admiration for King Charles III, the fundamental issue lies in the principle of choice. The documentary features discussions with both proponents and critics of the monarchy.

Recounting a childhood memory of Queen Elizabeth II visiting Cardiff, Humphrys noted his father's refusal to participate, saying he would "never bend the knee to anyone." This sentiment, Humphrys suggested, influenced his own perspective.

Humphrys questioned why advocating for an alternative to the Royal Family is considered a taboo, asserting that in a democracy, such discussions should be permissible. He articulated his objection to the practice of "bowing the knee" to a leader who, while not a political figure, is still considered the nation's leader.

During his extensive career with the BBC, which included presenting programs such as the Nine O'Clock News, the Today programme, and Mastermind, Humphrys had opportunities to interact with Queen Elizabeth II. He recalled one such encounter at Buckingham Palace where, after an interview, the Queen responded with a simple "no" when he inquired about a potential follow-up interview. Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment regarding the documentary and Humphrys's statements.
