Democrats in Vermont have selected economist Amanda Janoo as their nominee to challenge Republican Gov. Phil Scott in his bid for a sixth term as governor. Janoo defeated Aly Richards, a former CEO of a child advocacy organization, in the party's primary election.

Scott, who was unopposed for the Republican nomination, is seeking his sixth two-year term. If re-elected, he would become the longest-serving governor in Vermont's history, surpassing former Gov. Howard Dean. Vermont and New Hampshire are the only states with two-year gubernatorial terms.

Scott, a moderate Republican, has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. In the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, he endorsed Nikki Haley. For the 2024 general election, Scott stated he voted for then-Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump.

Despite Vermont being a predominantly Democratic state, Scott has consistently won re-election by significant margins. In his 2024 re-election bid, he garnered 73% of the vote, an increase from the 69% he received in his 2022 victory. The general election in November will present Democrats with their sixth consecutive attempt to unseat the popular Republican governor.
