A high school football player in Arkansas practiced for approximately an hour with a venomous cottonmouth snake inside his helmet before coaches discovered the reptile. The incident occurred at Maumelle High School.
School officials were stunned when a player brought his helmet for inspection during practice, revealing the two-foot-long snake concealed beneath the padding. Athletic Director Kirk Horton described the discovery as a moment of "shock and disbelief," noting the extreme unlikelihood of such an event.
The snake had apparently sought refuge in the dark, enclosed space of the helmet. The student began to notice an unusual sensation while wearing the helmet during practice, leading to the discovery.
School staff secured the helmet in a tote bag until Maumelle Animal Services arrived. Animal Services Director Chris Davis reported that while he has removed snakes from various unusual locations, including car vents and backpacks, he had never encountered one inside a football helmet.
Agents safely removed the cottonmouth by submerging the helmet in water, coaxing the snake out. Cottonmouths are considered the second most venomous snake in Arkansas, with a tendency to seek shelter in dark, protected areas. The snake has since been relocated to a forested area away from the school.
